Yes. and Hip Hop too. Kids who are trying to find their own place in the world, are listening and making the artists role models. ALL teenagers want to buck the system. I say teenagers (though older people...20+ are into it too) because that's when most people are influenced to rebel against how the previous generation is living.

That's how we progress, really...when someone thinks outside the box, but when your influences tell you to step so far out, that you think it's SO important to have material goods (ie; high dollar shoes, gold jewelry etc...) so you LOOK like you have your act together...that you will steal to get it...or when they promote women 'shakin' that a$$' and the girls all think guys will RESPECT them for it...the role models are doing much more damage than good. It's more important now, to carry a weapon to school, kill off your enemies and procreate like the gangsta's sing about, than it is to take care of your family and make something REAL of yourself.

You will NOT get respect, or financial security or a boyfriend/husband that will treat you right because you leave the house half naked, rub yourself all over other GIRLS on the dance floor and think everytime you hear a rap song, you have to pretend you're humping something.

You will NOT find a girlfriend who will be true to you, and stand by your side and support you, because you carry a gun and give her stolen jewelry, while calling her your bi7 ch.

I know...you can easily SAY that people who assimilate like that are stupid, and that only a few do that. Ozzy Ozbourne has been blamed for quite a few suicides...but then, people didn't commit suicide by the hundreds over Ozzy music. People ARE joining gangs, doing drive by's and having 4 babies by 4 different people...by the hundreds.

I don't think rap is ruining society, but I think it's having an effect on our society and culture. Yes, rap is showing our youth that it's okay to have sex; you have to look out for number one; and it's all about the "bling bling." However, it's showing that our society is decreasing the stigma of race. And I don't think wearing diamond earrings and white Nikes is doing anything to our culture.

This question reminds me of a book I scanned in the book store today, "Everything but the Burden: What White People take from Black Culture." I think you might enjoy reading this

To get back to your question: It's a fad. They come and go. All the time. Remember feathered hair? Parachute pants? This is the same. It's just people rebelling against the social norm, if there is one, that is.

However, if you examine it further, you'll find something astonishing. The people wearing are telling you something. That they're afraid. So they put on this stand-offish attitude and tell everyone to not mess with them because they'll get f'ed up. It's also a way to find your comfort zone. One thing that also happens with fads is that a lot of people are into them. And that means there's a chance to make friends and meet people.

If you look at this way, rap isn't necessarily ruining society, it's just a tool to bring people together, though it may seem odd to you and I, but for them, it means a person can fit in. It's rather nice, though you do kind of wish they would have a little more respect with the people they talk about in the music, but hey, that's free speech! And I wouldn't censor a word of it.

Add: In response to Mr. Curious: I listen to rap myself, but I still quite the intellectual too. I'm on a college debate team. And... and I use the f-bomb quite frequently. But that didn't come from rap music, it came from being in the Marines.

Rap only runs the low parts of society. Sometimes, it revolves around a certain area like mine. Now you see, im in a death metal band so... heh... sucks for me here. But yes, rap does run society to a FAR extent. Just look, rap is at its peak right now. Crime is up, music is tooken over with... i hate to say this... but ****, society is careless, people LITTER more, graffitti, knappy dressing, drugs, premature sex, and just violence.
This will sound nerdy... but, the Chinese has a dynastical chart which states...
1. A dynasty (genre of music) will take over land.
2. Soon will decline.
3. Internal conflict follows.
4. A new dynasty comes along.
This chart will work with music too... it happened with rock.
Ok so now... rap is at internam conflict...

In the end, gangs have always existed, and always will, just right now, they have society ran off a lifestyle called gangster.

''im a little racist when it comes to this'' so.
god damn blacks just want some attention, and they beg for it in the dumbest ways.

I don't know. But I do know the kids in my neighbourhood who are listening to rap try to be ganstas which is annoying 'cos kids are suppose to be cute, not flirtin' with me and then dissin' me when I walk away or say something about their attitude. Guys are fightin' and creating fueds with other people and same with the girls.

But it all can't say for sure how rap is influencing society on a larger scale, there's other things too that influences society.

Absolutely. Since the advent of rap I have seen the language of young people deteriorate faster than at any other time in our history. When I began teaching high school in 1986 one would rarely if EVER hear the f--k word spoken by students and now it is heard ALL the time by students on campus, and I attribute it almost 100% to rap and hip-hop lyrics that popularize and glamorize profane lyrics and vulgar attitudes and lifestyles. People are influenced by what they expose themselves to all the time--there is no way it cannot influence our attitudes. if what we hear and what we see DIDN'T influence (as some apologists weakly claim) then why do companies advertise? They advertise because study after study after study proves that our behavior is influenced by what we see and hear. Among students that do NOT fill their heads with the garbage and trash contained in rap and hip-hop lyrics there entire attitude and language abilities are elevated miles above those who choose to pollute their minds with the filth so commonly performed by talentless rap performers who substitute shock and profanity for artistic vocals and artistic lyrics.

There has been violence and immorality in society since the beginning of humankind. I don't think rap music or other things such as grand theft auto will make as big an influence as the government.

Dude. I cant sit at home in peace without some arrogant person blasting the most perverse music. It is such an abomination to life. I wish the worst upon these people. Its so trashy. They give no thought to life at all. I wish God would give society a very hot bath :D

yes and no. Music always has influenced our culture, but I don't think it deserves the power it has. Rap may seem like it is a bad influence, but I think people give it too much credit.

I'm not going to be long winded like before my edit, let me just get it straight.
Sailors wear earrings, white uniforms, swear, and rape girls. Do they listen to rap? NO!

There are so many ways everything could have happened, pointing the finger at the scary, differant thing isn't the solution.

"Pictures are causing corruption"
"Reading is causing corruption"
"Ragtime is causing corruption"
"Rock n' roll is causing corruption"
"Video games are causing corruption"

5 prime examples of overly blamed things
(in case your still a bit dillusional, its a fact that video games have 1/3 the influence of movies.)

Besides, rappers don't encourage underage sex.

rap only as a negative effect on society if people are stupid enough to live by the lyrics. they are the same people who do the stuff from tv after seeing the warning: DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!
