It sounds like it could be one of two things:
1) The laundry is spending too much time the washer damp and "grows" that funky smell -or-
2) The laundry is not getting as clean as it needs to in the washer.
You will need to figure out what the problem is....and there is no amount of fabric softener that you can use that will cover it up!

Brenda has the right idea, this happens to me I always forget the towels for some reason!! Fabric softener will help but not solve the problem. Next go around in the wash use the hottest water possible for the fabric, use either vinegar, or I use borax, I also will put in some non-clorine bleach if the clothing allows. If needed put in a extra rinse cycle. Dry hot and use fabric softener. I found on some towels it will take a couple of times. Good Luck!

Did the towels sit in the washing machine for a day or two before drying them in the dryer? It sounds like the towels spoiled and the smell was set in the dryer.

interesting
that smell usually happens if you leave your wet clean laundry in the washing machine too long before you dry it.
I coudn't tell you what it is if you dry immediately after it's washed though.

this is what i would try. put 1 cup of white vinegar in the wash cycle, with about 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda, with laundry detergent. then in the rinse cycle put 1 cup of vinegar only.
hopefully that will get of the odor.

You have fungus growing inside your machines - look in the grocery store for products to fix this - it's pretty common. Make sure you empty your machines as soon as they're finished.

sounds like you may have left it in the washer too long and it got moldy. Try soaking it in vinegar. I use white vinegar in my downy ball and it softens and you don't need dryer sheets.
