It motivated the development of the technologies which were shortly afterwards used as the basis for the development of the first electronic digital computers.

In 1943, Max Newman and Tommy Flowers built the "Colossus" code-breaking device for Bletchley Park, containing 1500 vacuum tubes and a 5000-chars/sec paper tape reader. It helped them attack the German "Tunny" and "Fish" ciphers, which were even more difficult than the "Enigma" one.

In 1945, J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly built the "ENIAC" calculator at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering in Pennsylvania, to generate artillery range tables for newly developed ammunition. It contained 18,000 vacuum tubes.

Neither of these was truly a computer, but ideas based on them led John von Neumann of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Princeton to set out the design of a more general-purpose computing device.

The first complete machine to this new design was "EDSAC", built by M.V. Wilkes at the Mathematical Laboratory of the University of Cambridge in the U.K. and first operated in 1949. It used cheap vacuum tubes bought in war surplus stores, and a memory device adapted from WWII radar sets.

~Militarily, it made it a whole lot easier to kill more people on a larger scale for less cost. Non-militarily, it accellerated polution geometrically and gave rise to a drastic increase in heart trouble, high blood pressure, cancers of various types, psychoses and neuroses and all sorts of other neat health problems. Also led to slums, unemployment and rampant poverty. And Henry Ford planted the seeds of the sexual revolution. How much prior to WWII? The discovery of fire was a biggie and the wheel didn't do to badly either.
