It's a GREAT idea! Do it!

Send a thank you to each person who interviewed you, including your networking contacts (if any).

Thank them for taking the time to consider you, interview you, and let you know the outcome. Tell them you enjoyed meeting them and appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the company.

Express disappointment at not being hired for the position, and - gently - reiterate those of your qualifications that seemed to be of greatest interest to them.

Tell them how interested you are in working there, and ask them to keep you in mind for the next opening.

Ask one or two (or all) of them if it would be OK if you touched base with them in 3 months (or 6 months) to see if the need for more help (you) is developing.

You might close by saying that you know it's unusual to send a thank you after receiving a rejection letter, but you enjoyed meeting the people there, thought that it would be a great place to work, and want to be considered for future opportunities.

I have seen the #2 or #3 person hired when the #1 candidate didn't work out. It does happen!

Thank You Letter After Rejection

Definitely, people remember little stuff like that. I sent a thank you note to all of the interviews I went to, even if I was pretty sure they weren't going to hire me. The person that eventually hired me actually commented and thanked me for writing him a thank you letter. Get it in as fast as possible, personally addressed to person who interviewed you, and keep at it, unless you really blew it, recruiters love persistence!

Great idea!

It's always good to find out everything about the company. Find a need and fill it.

Stay in contact from time to time.

Something short and sweet will suffice:
"Thank you for the opportunity of interviewing. Although another candidate was chosen, I consider your company my first choice for an employer and hope for future consideration."
