ok---so if a person has a sex addiction/cant get enough/always craving/hunting/thinking about sex---how do you curb your cravings. I am married, openly, and hubby knows all I do-----but cant seem to get enough. Seems to be a bit of both an addiction and nymphomania.

I believe it's a chemical dependency in the brain much like some addictive drugs effect the brain. There should be medications available to treat it. They might also have some deficiency craving also.I believe this would be a form of vampirism or craving blood or body fluids. Check with Freud too.

I don't think being addicted to sex is the same as being a nymphomaniac, and Liking sex doesn't make a person a sex addict either. We are supposed to like it, What is not to like?
When sex is used as a means to feel good about ourselves and continuiously pursued despite consequences or we take risks then I think it's correct to assume potential addiction. An addict or the disease of addiction will manifest itself in any number of
ways that will result in immediate pleasure taken to extremes even after the pleasures diminish and negative results occur.
Sex is probably the most basic means to feed the disease.
Nymphomania is a condition itself where one physically never seems to get enough or is satisfied after the orgasm, where the normal person's drive will temporarily diminish. This condition doesn't make the person an addict.
Anyway that's how I see it.

Nymphomaniac is a gender specific term for female hypersexuality (this problem in men is called satyriasis). Usually from what I've seen hypersexuality (or Nymphomania) is another form of addiction. Black Snake Moan showed a great example of the lifestyle of a Nympho.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymphomania
says the following:
Hypersexuality is a desire for human sexual behavior at levels high enough to be considered clinically significant.
Hypersexuality is characterized by an impairing need for frequent genital stimulation that, when achieved, does not result in emotional or sexual satisfaction. This dissatisfaction is what is believed to encourage the heightened frequency of sexual stimulation, as well as additional physiological and neurological symptoms.
The concept of hypersexuality replaces the older concepts of nymphomania (or furor uterinus) and satyriasis. Nymphomania was believed to be a psychological disorder characterized by an overactive libido and an obsession with sex. In males the disorder was called satyriasis (for etymology of the words, see nymph and satyr). "Nymphomania" and "satyriasis" are no longer listed as specific disorders in the DSM-IV.
Nymphomania owes its name to the feminine nature spirits of Ancient Greece, known as nymphs. Satyriasis owes its name to the mythical masculine creatures of Ancient Greece, half man/half goat creatures known as satyrs.
The threshold for what constitutes hypersexuality is subject to debate, and critics question whether a standardized diagnostic threshold even exists. Sex drive varies widely in humans, and what one person would consider a "normal" sex drive might be considered excessive by some and low by others. The consensus among those who consider this a disorder is that the threshold is met when the behavior causes distress or impaired social functioning.

That word is so old-fashioned.
A person can be a sex-addict and they behave the same way an alcoholic or drug addict behaves.
Sex with anyone at anytime rules their lives until they get help or self-destruct.

It's the addiction of having to have it all the time with whomever one can have it. There are lots of people who love sex, have it a lot, but the nymphomaniac NEEDs it all the time.

There are some different reasons. Women become nympho's sometimes after being sexually abused as children. Men usually when they expose themselves to porn. Too many men think porn is not dangerous, yet it is the fastest growing addiction right now. This surpasses drugs and alcohol. That's pretty bad. Knowing if you are addicted to anything is always wanting it and not being able to control that addiction.

Its just one of the addiction syndromes. For whatever reason, your brain is hardwired to want sex in excess. You can tell your a nympho if it starts to severly affect your life.

a need for sex
Addiction is defined by the consequences.
If the person has to have sex, even though it cost them there job, marriage, family, etc.... That is what makes them a Nymphomaniac.
hope that helps
