It's a poppy, which is taken from the work "In Flanders Field," which commemorates one of the most horrific/heroic battles of WWI. It's worn every November to commemmorate Remembrance Day in Canada.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
The poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The link below contains both the poem and the story behind it.

These red pins are actually in the form of a poppy. The poppy is the symbol of the Canadian Remembrance Day Nov.11. Which commemorates the the sacrifices of those who served our country in previous wars and peace keeping operations. WW1 was ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 and so it is on this date every year we honor the survivors and those who paid the supreme sacrifice. The poppy was chosen as a symbol from the poem "In Flanders Fields" written by Dr. John McRae. The first line is In Flanders Fields the poppies blow. Hence the poppy. If you have not read it I would recommend you do so, it is very stirring. I like to think that every Canadian is wearing a poppy this week.
