Not sure if it counts as scientific, but your body can habituate (get used to) the drugs, so for a user to get a similiar effect, they actually have to take more of the substance.

There is nothing that happens in your brain that "causes" you to use or abuse drugs. The abuse of drugs is a choice and a behaviour over which people have control, as difficult as it is. If it was something that happened in the brain, it would mean a drug addict or alcohol could never be held responsible for their actions, because something beyond their control caused their problem and their behaviour.
