One would think that a really crowded physical situation would have a negative effect on productivity- people require a certain amount of their own space in which to best perform the tasks. I would not be able to stand it if I felt cramped against someone else all day at work!

It is bad. Working in cramped conditions affects employees morale and ability to do job. There is also the problem of other workers casuing disturbances. Of course if the place is dark and ugly people are not going to want to be there.

A lot. The stress levels of workers can be greatly ffected by their work area. Too small and they feel cramped. Too many people an they feel cluttered etc

heightens morales... people are happier because they aren't in such a small space.
If a person is content in their work space, and don't feel like they have less space then a hamster in cage, they will be more efficient.

A person needs to be in a work space/area in which they can concentrate and devote as much time to their work as possible.
