First, get an ethernet hub or switch. (If you're going to connect more than two computers then a switch is a better choice)
Make sure you have an eternet port on each. (If they are different speeds, they'll need to either be 10/100 capable, or you'll need a 10/100 hub or switch. (Of course if you have gigabit, you'll need to account for that as well)

Once you connect the computers, setup networking on Windows. You'll need to do a little configuration, but the wizard makes it easy. You might have to make one a DHCP server, unless you have a router on the network. If you've got Cable or DSL, the router that you are using for that has DHCP which will setup the IP address of each computer.

The best way is to use a hub and build a LAN connection between the two, You can build a direct LAN with a Cat-5 ethernet cross over cable, however you will get faster packet thoughput using a hub not to mention can add more computers and add a gateway ISP.

What you need to do is see if both of your computers have ethernet jacks, if they dont, buy a card for them, preferably a gigabit card. Then, you go and buy yourself a nice long, high quality, shielded, ethernet cable, plug it into both of them, start the computers, and usually it will work itself out, if not, just open network connections, and run the network setup wizard.
