The gender of a baby can be detected via ultrasound at around 15-18 weeks, provided the baby's in a good position to see. Amniocentesis will give the baby's gender much more accurately but most doctors will not perform the procedure unless the woman is above age 35 or there are other risks involved with the pregnancy.

I heard they can tell you at 16 weeks, but like to wait only because the other organs are fully visible at 20 weeks. Last week I was 17 weeks and I wasn't feeling good. I asked my dr. to do an ultrasound while I was at his office. He hesitated but I kept begging and he did it. He could see the genitals perfectly and I am having a girl!!!!!!!
But..it also depends on the equipment. If you live in the country or somewhere where there is older eqipment that may make a difference.! Good luck! Believe me I know how anxious you are!

Usually around week 19 or 20 when they do the ultrasound to check out the development of the baby. If the baby is positioned correctly and cooperates, they can tell.

If the baby keeps its legs closed and won't turn so they can see, they can't accurately tell.

Amniocentesis tells 100 percent, but I don't recommend it. Also, there is a new blood test that you can take early on in the pregnancy that tells the sex of the baby.

I was told at 18 with my first, it was right. I was told at 14 with my second, it was right. My doctor told me at my 13th week i was having a girl, and i will find out as i get another ultrasound Tomorrow (wk 16) My OB said they the "goodies" start to form around 10 weeks. But the longer you wait, the more accurate the they are. If you only get one ultrasound, your best bet is to wait until the normal 18 to 20 week ultrasound! BUt even then they could be wrong!! Just depends if your baby is giving you a good shot, and if the tech is good.!!!

We found out at what we were thinking was 19 weeks. Ultrasound showed we were actually just 18 weeks. Still, they only like to give you their best guess about the gender of the baby, especially earlier on. We took it with a grain of salt -- and bought too much pink!

Request for an ultrasound at around week 20-22. The technician would be able to tell you the sex of the baby, if he or she cooperates. Congrats and good luck.
