Mentally/physically challenged children are placed in Special Education classes as well as Mainstream. Some also have emotional behavior disorders. Each child's particular challenge may vary from the next child's. One child may have Down's Syndrome while another is Autistic.

Sometimes they work together on projects and sometimes they work alone. Sometimes the assistant teachers work one on one with these kids. They may watch movies. Some may eat lunch inside the classroom. The teacher may help feed them or help them to the bathroom. Some may be walked to the cafeteria or to a certain class by a teacher. Some are able to walk to a mainstream class alone. They are also escorted to their own buses. A physical therapist may visit the classroom to work with these children.

For two years, I worked with these kids from first grade through twelfth grade as a Subsitute Teacher's Aide. I do not know if the school has special classes for the preschoolers or kindergartners as I was never assigned to any.

First of all "They" are people. You refer to the kids as they as if they aren't. These children learn lifeskills and anything learned is a major accomplishment. The children are also mainstreamed. Integration teaches the children social skills and does not isolate them from the rest of the school. I teach children to read the words necessary to shop for groceries and signs that are in the world so they know what to buy at the store and where to cross the street, where there might be danger etc... Yes, the children are able to go to college when they graduate from high school. You would be surprised what someone with a disability or disorder can accomplish. Look at Temple Grandin now known as Dr. Temple Grandin. If you aren't familiar with her look up Asperger Syndrome. It's a form of autism. I hope I answered your questions.Would you like to know more. Elementary School. But High School was fun. Middle School was the worst.

First of all, thank you for saying mentally challenged.I hate the alternative words. My son is mentally challenged. He attended public school K-5.A typical day for him was:

He rode a special bus.
He attended Resource classes for Spelling ,Math and Reading.
He attended main stream classes for History and Science because there wasn't Resource classes in those subjects.
He ate lunch with his mainstream class.
He attended mainstream for Art,Music and P.E.

Pretty much he was teased a lot because he was different. We now home school and he is doing so much better.I hope this answered your question!!

Well, they have their own busses, lunches, teachers, classes, and school times, so I have no idea. We hardly ever see them at school. I do know that they don't go to college. In elementary school the not so challenged ones were in normal classes. There are special preschools for mentally challenged students as well.

Some mentally challenged children are taught life skills. To just be able to feed themselves is a great feat. It should make us all thankful for the things we take for granted.

They do kindergarten-level work throughout high school, which often lasts to the age of 21 with a program which gets them out of the house more often thus making the parents' live easier. And, no, they don't "do" college. DUH!
