Sadly, my gorgeous and perfect pet cat, Frodo, died this week. Is it wrong for me to already want another kitten to love? I'm considering adopting a new baby from the local animal shelter at the end of this week.

I don't want a replacement for my poor baby; I just need another pet to fill the void in my heart where he used to be. I think it might help me heal.

Am I making a mistake?

Of course you're not making a mistake! Do what your heart tells you and adopt a new baby to love! There are so many that need good homes. Years ago our dog died of cancer, and I desperately needed a new dog to love. I couldn't stand the total loneliness when I came home from work (she used to meet me at the door). I went to the Humane Society and found a new baby, a sweet Pomeranian named Pookie. She lived 13 years. Two months ago she died. If I hadn't already had two cats (Scooter and Daisy) I'm sure I'd already have another one before now. So go ahead, and please don't feel guilty. You will be giving a deserving pet a home. God Bless! :)
P.S. My avitar picture is a picture of Pookie that I drew in pastels. I know it's small and hard to see.

No, You are doing the right thing! I feel that all of us animal lovers owe it to these pets to take them in when we lose one.Your new Cat wont replace Frodo That cat will always have a special place in your heart.
Just think of all of the overfilled Shelters(I work in one)And evertime an animal is adopted it saves two lives..The Cat you adopt and the cat who ges hs spot.
You will still mourn your Kitty but We all have enough Love in our Heart to Love more than one animal...Go fill that Void.It wont make your Grief go away but it will give you a distraction and another pet to love!

I had to put my Rottie dog down in march due to Bone cancer. I grew up with her and it broke my heart. I would sometimes cry myself to sleep and on the drop of the hat just cry. It took me along time to get over her death. But remember you never get over loosing them, the pain just gets easier to deal with. Just try to make sure you are getting another pet at the right time. Frodo is and will always be Frodo. Just do not expect the new pet to like the same things or do the same things because you need to have Frodo in one light and a new pet in another. Good luck and best wishes!

Not at all. Everyone grieves differently and if it comforts you to get another one right away, go for it.
Sorry for your loss. I lost my kitty this year too, so I know just how sad it is.

I'm a Vet Tech, and see many strange things, this story may or may not cheer you up.
A gentleman has been coming to our clinic for almost 30 years, (the vet/owner has been seeing him and his cats for all that time.)
Well, this gentleman has an orange cat with a white "bib" on it's chest. The vet told us that everytime his cat dies, he always comes back the same day with an exact copy of the cat that just died. I met him 4 years ago when his cat died at the age of 14 of cancer. An hour later he had what, I swear, was the same cat. He wanted to get it's vaccines and make sure it was healthy. He named it the same name, and everything. A few months later, the cat was hit by a car and had to be euthanized. An hour later he was back with another copy cat. This one tested positive for feline leukemia and he had it put down. An hour later he had still another cat, identical to the first 2! So alike we got out the dead two to make a comparison. Scary similar!
Granted orange cats with white bibs are not rare, but what are the odds of being able to find 2 of them on the same day? Odd, very odd.
So, you're not strange by any means. Really.

Get a new cat! You don't need to 'replace' your old one but there is nothing wrong with getting another cat to keep you company. Its great you want to get a new kitten from a shelter because so many cats need homes. There's nothing wrong with filling that void with the love of another cat.

First up, I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a much-loved pet is a hard thing to deal with.

If you feel that getting a new kitten now is going to help you heal, and help you deal with your grieving for Frodo, then it is the right choice. Everyone is different in how they deal with losing a pet- if this feels right for you, then it is.

Take care

if your thinking of this in this frame of mind, your not making a mistake. you can't "replace" your long time friend, but you can fill the void.remember not to compare your new friend to Frodo. it wouldn't be fair. also, you may want to think about some volunteer work in the shelter before you make a decision. that"ll give you plenty of time to choose. and anyone who adopts from a shelter is my hero.
and look up RAINBOW BRIDGE on the internet. it'll help you

I think you know exactly what to do. Poor Frodo is probably in a happier place and he'd want you to be happy too!!! There are way to many cats at the humane societies, so that is an excellent choice!!!

Although we don't have pets in my house because of allergies, I grew up with pets and my Mom had pets. When my mother's pet (dog) died, we made sure that she found another that suited her in a short period of time (we paid for her pets). Having a pet is having another living thing in your home that gives you unconditional love and that you can love and talk to. I feel that it is a good thing to have. Go find a kitten and be happy.
