I think your question is wrong. You assume that all people prefer the sun to the moon, and I think that is incorrect.

Some people like sunshine and sunny days; the beach, surf, lazy summer afternoons.
Some people prefer the mystery and wonder of the full moon and how it lights up the earth with a silvery glow that is unlike anything man-made.
Your question is like asking "why do people like vanilla more than chocolate?".

Not me. I prefer the moon because I can stare at it's beauty and I love the night sky. Whereas staring at the sun will cause me blindness. But seriously, I love a full moon lit night, that is so bright, it lights up the area around me in a soft magestic light.

The Sun is dynamic. It's changing right in front of us, and we don't know exactly how it works. The Moon? We've got a pretty good handle on it, and it's not doing anything new.

The moon's always had a certain mystery about it. It's usually dark when you see it and it's glowing strangely. No wonder people fear it and have superstitions about it.

The sun gives off warmth and light.

Actually, when you think about it, it's pretty obvious.

because the sun is the one thing keeping everything on earth alive! if our planet had originated without a moon, we could probably adapt, but without the sun, wed have absolutley no heat, light, or orbit... i.e. no life...

Perhaps it is because in the night evil things can hide and scare us and in the day all is brought to light.

Someday there will be no more night....maybe in our souls we know this and are naturally drawn to it.
