Caste system is a slur on the mankind and more so it prevails in the largest democracy on the earth. As Indians we ought to act fast and eliminate it. Certainly with the advent of educationa and increasing rate of literacy, caste system is going to take a backseat. The degeneration process continues but the pace is slow.
As far as prevalence of this system is concerned, it dates back to ancient system wherein the caste was not as such termed but category of people doing a particular act in the society. Then caste was not by birth but by work. Now over a period of time, coming generations followed their ancestors work and that happened to remain with the family as a tag. Now several things contribute to the continuation of the system. The first and foremost being the political requirement of most of the politicians to cash onto the vote bank. The second culprit is the reservation system which is unfortunately on the increase (rather than on the decrease. and again the politicians are to be blamed for it.). The reservation system develops a vicious chain and is a deteriment to the eradication of the caste system.

In all probability, the political will on the part of the government can certainly help eliminate the caste system. Indian youth are though very positive in approach and tend to disregard the caste system (Marriage, reservation and day to day dealings).

I wish to put here that such thoughts as expressed by you and some others from time to time do help the cause.

In first place India is India. The caste system was outlawed in India years ago but the Indians cling to it anyway. It is tradition. It is connected with Hinduism. All nations have their religious traditions, yes us too. One is we Americans have the annoying habit of thinking we're better then the rest of the world. Read the book , "The Ugly American", sometime. Came out around the time of Vietnam and the starting of the Peace Corp. Think of the traditions we hold dear. Are they based on fact or fiction. Like Christmas for one. Just because our parents and grandparents did it, does that make it right?

As a Westerner who has been in India for awhile now, I can tell you that your ranting is a lot of BS.

I know for a fact that there is a Law against Discriminination , on Caste, Creed or Color very much in place there. I've personally seen how some people abuse this Law by suing at the drop of a hat!

Hell, I was sued by some guys of a group called "Dalits" when a couple of their people failed the online competency Test for a job on our Project!? They claimed that we had discrimininated against them because they were from that "Caste"!? And, in the Court, where it was proven that there was no way we knew any personal information about the candidates and the Test Evaluations were automated and fair; they wanted us to lower the Standards to one third of what it was for the "General Category" because they were from this "Caste"!?!? Naturally, we refused and stood by our Rights and won.

I was told that they have reserved Constitucency Seats, reserved jobs and have that abysmally low one third standard in all Governmental jobs!?

If you ask me, it's the rest of the people there that are being "Discriminated" against.

It is mere politics the power hungry politicians do not allow any particular individual to cross the boundary of illiteracy and base urges and develop an eagerness for the freebees without realising the evil consequences.
