Multiply both sides by a. Then divide both sides by 9. You should get a=5.

Okay, first your goal is to get this equation into the form a=something. Clearly, this cannot happen when you have a in the denominator of a fraction. So you need to find a way to cancel it out, and you do that by multiplying both sides by a. So we have:

45=9a

That's better, we now have a on one side of the equation. Of course, it's the right side, but x=y is the same as y=x, we can just flip this equation around.

9a=45

Okay, now a is in the right position, but it's being multiplied by 9. So we need to undo that, and naturally we undo a multiplication with a division. So divide both sides by 9:

a=5

And there's the answer. The key here is that whatever we did to one side of the equation, we also did simultaneously to the other. You must remember that. The other thing you must remember is that we are multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting. Sometimes, in a problem like:

3a+5=8

Teachers will, in their instructions, say "okay, now move the 5 to the other side" and get 3a=8-5 or 3a=3, and you're left wondering where the minus came from. What is actually happening here is that you are subtracting 5 from both sides of the equation, so on the left you have 3a+5-5, which is 3a+0 or just 3a. The -5 on the other side comes from the fact that you must do the same thing to both sides of the equation. As long as you remember these two things, it will be very difficult to make a mistake. Now, perhaps you can figure out how to further simplify 3a=3.

Good luck.

Edit: yes, that's right. Now, how might you reverse the operation of squaring?

OPTION 1
a. multiply both sides by a so you get 45 = 9a
or cross multiply: a/b = c/d; ad = bc
b. then divide both sides by 9, 45/9 = 9a/9, answer: 5=a
