I think they probaly used Gumout Air intake and throttle body cleaner. dealers sell it as:
Ford part number D9az-19579-AA
GM part number 1052626
AC Delco number X-66A
Mopar Part number 4318037

Make sure that you spray it directly into the intake pass the mass air sensor or other emmision control sensors.

i own a repair shop, and this can be done by pouring a small amount of transmission fluid in to the car a little at a time ,all i does is make it run hotter and this is what makes it burn the carbon off the valves ,there are some better chemicals out there that will do it ,and some in spray form, but all the older mechanics prefer to use trans fluid because it does burn really hot in side of an engine, you can ask at a parts store ,and see what they have ,i use a small spray bottle with transmission fluid in it,it works the best,,good luck i hope this help,s.,,and its sprayed the the air intake usually for the best results.

for you to buy the agents used to clean carbon off internal parts
is not cost effective ,but you can try to purchase carbon buster
good luck finding it ,try the snap-on truck. i suggest you use tecron by chevron it comes in a black bottle , the trick is you must use it on every fill up for about 5 times to work , and it does work
