I stopped by the bar at 3 A.M.- to seek solace in a bottle or possibly a friend and I woke up with a headache like my head against a board.....

The only time is when my mother died. I was, literally, drunk for an entire week - I just couldn't face up to the reality of the situation. Fortunately, I had a very close friend who stayed close by to make sure I wouldn't go completely over the edge who, gradually, talked me back down to earth.
I'm not an advocate of drinking by any means, but there are times when life just throws something so big at us that we just can't handle it. I think many people have turned to the bottle during those times even though it does no good.
