The madman.

Which is an important distinction, really. Because although the madman occurs in a story WRITTEN by Nietzsche, there are many who suggest that it's not appropriate to suggest that these are Nietzsche's personally held beliefs.

After all, who puts their own beliefs in the mouth of a professed madman when they're writing the story?

For the record, I always hate it when people use that quote out of context... which happens virtually all the time. Alas.

The Madman from Frederich Nietzsche's "The Gay Science." He published it other places as well; all of his work is well worth the read.

As a side note, I'm really quite disappointed only a few people have answered this correctly, or at least identified Nietzsche. Do people no longer read?

Friedrich W. Nietzsche, 1844 to 1900, said it in "The Gay Science". He was a German philosopher, an atheist and very wise. What he said is often taken out of context to Damn those who doubt the existence of God as he is portrayed in most churches. In part the statement he made was, "God is dead and we have killed him..." in German.

Nietzsche, would be the most common answer. Perhaps it's a trick question because he said: "Gott ist tot" in German? =)
