My husband slammed his knee into the side of my calf full force tonight (accident of course) It kind of swelled up and mild brusing, but my problem is I can't move my foot. I cant point my toes or extend it the other way. Does any one know what might cause this or what I can do to fix it? Walking is very hard to do and very painful, any help would be great!

My **GUESS** - I am NOT a doctor - is that the "light bruising" is jst what has shown up so far - and that the swelling is because of brusing much deeper down.

Deep impact can sometimes take a couple of days for the bruise to really cmoe out - so do not be too fazed if your leg looks worse this time tomorrow night - and perhaps worse still the next day. Ot can just take a while for DEEP injury bruises to come out.

As for the swelling, if you have ibuprofen and asprin (and are able to take these safely) they may help.

Other than that, I would suggest unless you are going to see a doctor, then as much rest for the limb as possible. Walking on it at the moment is probalby going to prolong the pain and the healing process.

First of all, realize that when we have an injury, our body responds by decreasing it's ability to stimulate a muscle contraction in order to protect the injured site. This could certainly explain your inability to move your foot. However, there could be other reasons as well...

Numbness, tingling, cramping when trying to walk? These are things to watch for after this type of injury to rule out posterior compartment syndrome. The fascia is a connective tisse that surrounds our muscles, nerves, etc...sometimes this forms little "compartments" in our body, which contain muscles, nerves, and blood vessles. When swelling gets trapped inside a compartment, it can begin to build up pressure in the compartment until the nerves get compressed resulting in weakness (inability to point the foot), pain, and numbness/tingling. If the injury caused a hematoma, this could certainly cause compartment syndrome which usually requires drainage or fasciotomy to relieve the pressure.

Finally, blunt trauma may also result in rupture of the muscle which may also result in the inability to move the foot.

First aid tonight is to use cold packs. 10 minutes every couple hours. If you are still not able to move the foot in the morning, or if the swelling and weakness get progressively worse overnight, seek medical attention right away. You certainly don't want to develop a bloot clot.

It could be a dvt...which can be fatal. That is a blood clot and not to be taken lighty. Get to the doctor tommarow before it causes you a stroke. Im serious. Look it up on the net...deep vein thrombosis....which causes swelling and a heat when you touch it and is extremely painful the area may also look red.

Put some ice in a zip lock bag and then use
a towel to put between the ice and your leg.
If you cannot walk on it before you go to bed
I would go to and ER just to make sure you
did not crack or snap a bone. An X-Ray is
the only way they will be able to tell. Ice 20
min off 20 min, ice 20, off 20.

It could be nerve damage. It may be temporary due to the swelling, but I would go to the hospital to get it checked. If you choose to wait (not recommended) at least take some ibuprophen to help reduce the swelling. (I'd suggest 800mg every 8 hours)
