I spent over a year and a half living in a developing nation, and for me the hardest part was coming back to America, and trying to fit into a selfish consumer-based society. My family were supportive, but something in me changed on a profoundly deep level. It is hard for me to connect to a lot of old friends, who do not understand the changes that another culture can bring about.

As for my roots, I took time evey day to remember who I was, what I had accomplished, and where I had come from. My mom is a coal-miners daughter, and I was the first in my family to grsduate with anything more than a certificate. Most Americans you meet in places like Central America are form well-to-do families, so I found I had less in common with them than with the people I was living with in the village.

The thing to remember is, no matter what, you are still the same person at the core. Yoir inner values do not change (It"s more of an awakening than an actual change), but the outer way you express yourself will be different. Think of it as changing your style- you are still you underneath. You just grow into a style more the more comfortable with yourself you become. I found that the mroe I had time to myslef, to just think, the more i had to face the demons i had kept at bay for many years. A froeign country was my proving ground for facing a rape, overcoming a drug dependency, and many other things.

You will feel outside of yuorself, but there is a strange beauty and freedom in being able to be like this. You will soon learn who your true feeinds are, and you learn to value their insight more and more. i would say you will end up doing a lot of soul searching in the empty moment, so be prepared for the inner voice that will speak up! There is nothing to fear when you put things in perspective.

I lived in China for a year, and directly after that, I lived in Mexico for a year and a half...

Speaking from experience, the most important thing is to be able to hear your language...

As well, a person might have trouble adjusting to the new culture.

It helped to have my own music.

What I was most worried about before I left was if I'd be able to manage to, "survive."

If you're going to a foreign country with a friend, or with relatives, the most important thing is to have confidence in them...

Truthfully, there's no one you can count on more than your family or friends when you're abroad.

You have to stick together... You have to have each other's backs...

Don't get stuck there...
