I have been struggling with depression on and off for a long time.
I have had thoughts of suicide but never had any intention of following through on them. Lately I've been having those thoughts again, but along with new thoughts too, like cutting myself or going out and getting drunk (which I have never done. I don't drink at all).
I don't know where these new thoughts are coming from, and I want to know if they're caused by chemical imbalances because, even with my depression, these thoughts are completely new and something I've never thought of before.

Gonna ask you a question in response to your question and then get on with a legit answer, "What do you live for?"

If you are focusing on depression day-in and day-out, mixed with media, then you will start thinking about what other people do to cope with it, aka cutting yourself, getting drunk, partying, suicide. That's how people in the media, schools, and the world seem to deal with it. Also you mention chemical imbalances, which is a commercial based medicine.

If you are a teenager, you usually have a higher chemical imbalance then adults in the first place with puberty and all of the hormones that it implies.

If you always tell your self that you're depressed, you're going to be depressed. Think of why you are depressed in the first place, it might be something as simple as someone treating you bad in the past. Or something more difficult like parental rejection.

Depression might be your out for not being satisfied with your current life. Meaning it's become a habit when things arn't great or new in your life, then you fall back to depression.

Ok, but you're question is : "Where are these new thoughts coming from?"

A: The world around you. This is the televisions/internets/people around you's way of handling depression. The idea of cutting yourself, going out and getting drunk, and killing yourself are not thoughts you probably just came up with, you must have heard them somewhere. Think about why you are depressed in the first place? And don't follow through with any of those thoughts.

First, have you seen a professional? If you're in school, talk to the school couselor. If you can afford it, see a therapist. Don't think that seeing a professional means you're "nuts" or anything stupid like that... but you need to be diagnosed by a professional. If you are clinically diagnosed, then you are probably already on medication --- like a seratonin reuptake inhibitor (they usually regulate or modify the chemical imbalance). If you're NOT on medication --- see your doctor, cuz maybe you need to be.

Cutting yourself, getting drunk, hurting yourself are all symptoms that come from the underlying cause: you don't love yourself enough. I know that sounds harsh, but honey, think about it: its like you are punishing yourself for something, trying to hurt yourself, saying "I'll show you --- here's some pain, lets see you bleed, lets go out and get trashed, let's see how you look after THAT!"

I keep saying go see a professional doctor because these are some questions you need to ask yourself --- you need to stand infront of a mirror and really look at yourself, and ASK these things... and it will be better if, when you do, a strong and trained person is standing there to hold your hand and help you along...

BTW: a person's chemical imbalance is addressed through drugs. But depression, by and large, has so many other psychological and social ramifications that it doesn't just go away because you start medication; you need to work on it, day by day, EVERY day, and start building solid foundations for your life. You can't do that though if you have never addressed WHY you are depressed...

I hope you get through this... even if you totally fall apart, remember that once you hit the bottom, you can start climbing back up... and you WILL, if you ask for help NOW.

Hey im going through the same thing except i have cuts on my wrist and i got drunk twice... My councelor and i figured out that i cut and thought suicidal all the time to try (or want to try) to cause pain to relieve stress...i have no idea what exactly cause this...i just wanted you to know that i know what ur going through and that i am trying to support you...

but hey just hang in there...live life...and dont ever try cutting...its worse than it seems...and i was tracked down by the cops and in the hospital for 8 hours and couldnt eat anything...i was so close to going to buffalo for a week and being in a padded room where ppl watched me from a two way mirror....

if you feel like causing pain without it being life threatening, take a rubber band and snapp it...or...pinch ur arm...or even hold an ice cube in ur hand...

i really hope i made you feel any better... i probably didnt help at all...sorry im like tired and outta whack

I've answered this question before plus lots of related ones. My life reads like someone who struggled w. depression and mania for over 20 years and won so you might like to look back over some of my relevant answers to similar questions.
Yes it is a chemical or electro-chemical imbalance and I think it likely that a lot of people are taking a lot of prescriptions for things that may or may not really help but might be gaining credibility largely because people come out of these states anyway sooner or later (usually). First thing to check though is medical: blood & endocrine as many physical glandular defects can cause these types of problems eg. thyroid, adrenals, pituitary.

Let me put it to you like this - blunt and to the point. Depression is a medical condition and, if you are not a doctor, you should not be trying to diagnose and treat it. As a human being, I urge you, I beg you, go to a professional. Wanting to cut yourself and thinking about dying is no way to live. Your body has your mind screaming for relief - cutting - getting drunk. None of it will help you as much as proper treatment. There are so many GOOD medications out there to treat depression. I know, I'm on one. Take it from someone who used to cut and from someone who tried to commit suicide three times. Medication isn't about keeping you from dying. It's about helping you LIVE. Life is too precious to end without ever having lived or without ever having mastered the mess your hormones and brain chemicals are making of your life. There is a solution and it isn't death. I hope you look for it.

Best to get professional help here.

Having suicidal thoughts, even without the actual intention of carrying them out, may be an early indication of suicidal tendency.

Talk to someone you can trust and will be supportive and understanding. Family members, friends, or psychiatrist.

All the best to u.

I think i have depression too and i would like to know more about this too. I have the same feelings as you are, and i wish someone could help me too. You should go see a doctor at a clinic in your community. They will help you out. I still haven't went to the doctor yet, because i am scared. But, i am thinking about going soon though. Good Luck.
