An essay doesn't necessarily HAVE to contain any specific number of paragraphs--unless your assignment says so. However, you will normally have AT LEAST three paragraphs. More often you'll use more than that. Three paragraphs would include an introduction, a very brief body, and a conclusion. Normally the body would be longer. You'll likely include at least one paragraph for each main point you are making (with three points being quite standard).

The essays I always have to write are 5 paragraphs.
1st paragraph being the attention getter & thesis, the middle 3 paragraphs being supporting details and information & the last Paragraph being the conclusion.
I think a solid essay should have more than 3 paragraphs...just my opinion.

No, a 3-paragraph essay merely has an easy elementary/middle school structure of 1 intro+1 body + 1 conclustion. As one's writing skills progress, one will find that any number of body paragraphs can be used.

Noooo....

An essay can consist of anything from 1 to 1000 passages, if necessary. The standard length is 5 passages, especially for high school students.

Does not necessarily have to be three paragraphs, but it should have three parts.

The introduction (This is what I'm going to tell you.)

The body (This is what I am telling you.)

The conclusion (This is what I've told you.)

At least one paragraph for each section is best.
