It depends a little - on how you would like to be seen. In response to the question "Why are you so quiet":- Some quick thoughts include..
Put down > It helps me avoid tedious people / conversation
Thoughtful > I prefer to listen rather than talk
Thoughtful 2 > I prefer to think rather than chatter
Chatup 1 > I find it attracts intelligent people
Chatup 2 > I always go quiet before asking someone to dance...
Depends loads on the effect you want - and what sort of personality you are as to what sort of comment would work best for you.

Why are you so quiet=== *stay quiet a little longer, but if the question was repeated, say:* I'm saving my words/ voice for those who matter. But, I've saved enough to spare for useless conversation...... Like now!
