Consider Ornamental Chili--botanically, it IS a fruit :)

Description :
Christmas Pepper or Ornamental Chilli is a plant cultivated for its decorative fruits. It is a tall woody shrub with long ovate leaves. June onwards small, white flowers shoot from leaf axils. During October beautiful berries appear in various colors and shapes. The most popular varieties include: cone-shaped fruits in green, yellow, red, orange and cream; round shaped fruits in yellow or violet; red fruits in bunches of 2-3. These berries last between 2-3 months.

Care :
An easy to grow plant, Christmas Pepper is placed indoors during winter and outdoors in summer. It requires direct, bright light of several hours in a day. The plant does well at room temperature but flowers last longer if kept at a temperature of 13-15 degree celcius. Plant thrives in humidity and therefore the pot should be kept in a bowl of moist gravel. Water abundantly but do not allow water to stand in the pot. Feed liquid fertilizer fortnightly. The standard growing medium for Christmas Pepper consists of equal portions of loam, peat and sand.

Propagation :
Ornamental Chilli can be propagated from seed or alternatively seedlings can be bought in autumn. Plant is cultivated as an annual and thrown after fruiting.

I would grow some kind of berry or some grapes. Almost any other fruit grows on a tree. I doubt that there is any room for a tree on your desk.
