Could be a number of things ... if it's a virus you need to remove the hard-drive and "piggy-back" it into another computer for a complete virus scan
It could be the Thermal Grease on your CPU has dried out causing overheating, or a cooling fan not working that will shut most newish machines down or it could be something else hardware related

Check the simple stuff first:

Make sure the fan(s) are working and any vent screens or openings are not plugged. If either the CPU or power supply fans aren't working, the computer will shut down in short order.

If you have a recovery disk or emergency start up disk - boot the computer up using these and see if the concern is still present.
If it is, it's probably a hardware problem. If the concern isn't present, you have a soft ware or operating system problem.
You'll have to scan the HDD and see if you can fix it, or, at worst, reformat it and reload the operating system.
Computers can be rather frustrating at times, eh?

You at least know what the two problems that could be causing your computer to shut down are. Now you just need to pinpoint the problem. If your processor is overheating that would cause the computer to shut down. If you have a virus or trojan that could make your computer shut down. If you are relativly certin that your PC is virus free then it is probobly that your processor is over heating. If your computer is fairly new and you have not made any recent modifications, the processor is probobly not over heating and it is probobly a virus issue.

If it is a virus issue, you need to run a virus scanner and remove the virus. I recomend AVG Free from grisoft.

If your processor is overheating, most likely your heatsink has gotten caked with dust. Get a can of compressed air from your local computer store and open your computer and blow the dust of the processor heat sink.

Unfortunately and as much as you hate hearing it, you've most likely got a virus that's shutting you down. Even worse, it's no doubt in your Startup files so that every time your start the computer, it loads itself also. I'll be happy to work with you if you'd like until the problem is solved. Be prepared however to completely restore the hard drive. To do that you'll need your original Windows Installation CD. I'll also need all the info that you can tell me about your computer. Hit me at dumbbutt4321@yahoo.com and I'll help you with it. Larry RadioShack 01-9590

How far does it get? What does the post return? I suggest taking it to someone who knows how to work on computers. Basically it's like you said: Could be overheating, lack of power, or faulty hardware. Or it could be something software like a damaged OS, some sort of virus or other mal-ware. Without more detailed information, it is hard to diagnose.

lol, I like Dan's answer.....

It could be a lot of things causing that. If could be the CPU overheating, could be a bad ram chip, could be a corrupt file. Does it happen is safe mode? If it doesn't, its not overheating and its not a main part of the OS, but it could still be RAM. Have you installed any new programs or hardware?
When the OS loads in safe mode, it only load the basic set of drivers it need to start - no sound, network, etc, it also doesn't push the RAM as hard.

there is maximum of issues that could do this. just to get rid of the battery, take it out and run the laptop on the PSU basically. If it remains on, this is a defective battery. in case you have the comparable situation, as others have suggested it must be overheating (issues like the heatsink coming far flung from the CPU can do this, or maybe lots of dirt and so forth interior the vents/heatsink/followers. If it relatively is sparkling of dirt, it must be a defective factor (reminiscence, motherboard or CPU). Like I suggested, it particularly could nicely be maximum of issues inflicting the shutdown.
