This woman met Jesus while going to her only son's burial--in the context of the time this was about the worst fate that could befall a woman, since a son was expected to care for his mother in her widowhood. The fact that he was her only son meant that she had no means of support, and in the first century AD you couldn't just apply for public assistance.

Jesus felt compassion for her and raised her son back to life.
