You got to go out and listen. There's just too much to categorize. Rock goes back into the 50's, jazz back into the 20's. Just those two genres alone are broken into dozens of different categories.

If you start with rock, just start with the Beatles and listen to them and everything that came after them, the Stones , the Who, the Kinks, Cream, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Yes, Jethro Tull and on and on and on.

The Andrew Sisters. haha i know i sound like i'm 70 but in reality i'm a sophmore in high school...they're pretty awsome.
Also any kind of 80's pop, techno, rap, and rock is freaking mind blowing

personally i like Led Zeppelin, not the 3 or 4 popular songs most kids are digging these days, but the real deep stuff. and of course the Beatles but that goes without saying.

Neil Young is my favorite song writer. highly reccomended.

I don't know if you like female singers but Celine Dion she is "The Top Selling Female Artist Of All Time", I guess it don't get any greater then that.
