Smoking affects just about every part of your body in a negative way...including healing from ALL injuries. There is a high co-occurance rate between chronic back pain and smoking (as well as a number of other things). Whenever I treat someone who has a back problem and they smoke, I usually double the estimated time for recovery. So far, I'd say that's been pretty accurate.
