There is no "getting a free music download" unless you use a software like limewire to share files.

First you need the program provided by the iPod company called "iTunes" you want to drag your music you own and or have into the iTunes library, then the program converts your music into the valid file typr for your iPod, then you want to either set the setting that updates all your music onto your iPod automaticaly or drag your songs into the iPod's folder and it will put the music onto the iPod. Now you don't necessarily have to buy iPods music, you can get your own from other stores, but you have to burn them onto discs and rip them off to get the file type for your iPod. Hope that helps!
