Studying abroad is probably the best thing you could do. Traveling to other countries is great, but you do not get an absolute feel of the culture and society untill you live there for at least a quarter. You will learn so much about different cultures and ways of life. It will really change your life. You will see America in a whole new light. You will really experience another country and immersed in it. You won't be looking at it like a tourist, who sees it as if he was at the zoo watching. You will be living it, and learning so much.

Currently I'm an exchange student in US. Well, it depends if you want to go by yourself or in a program. It also depends whether you just want to study, or meet new people/friends, or learning new culture/language, or simply just having fun (meaning forgetting all you studies and party all the time, but I won't recommend this if you're going in a program).
You can choose practically every place in the world. It is you that make it suitable. If you're not ready for different language, choose a country that speaks the same language you do. Just get ready for different things you will find.
If you want to go in a program, I'd recommend EF, AFS, or Rotary

I studied in the Philippines (4 to 6) grade, I graduated in Okinawa.1973. Being on a AFB, luckily I only had to speak American. My best advise is know the basic language of the country before you go. You want to know "Where am I", How do I get __?, Where can I find food?, and where is a shower/toilet? Also you must need to let the people where you are to know you do not speak their language well. Your best bet may be to try to find a disc or web-site where you can learn the language where you are going to be.(And carry an interpreting dictionary.) France is nice, I've heard. Spain was pretty good. I have also heard Australia is nice.

Yes, I went to graduate school in Australia for Applied Linguistics.
I loved it. It was very interesting to experience a different approach to education and to participate in discussions not dominated by other Americans.
I have continued to live abroad now for nearly ten years in Japan and I recommend the endeavor wholeheartedly.

Well, sort of. I spent one semester abroad in Puerto Rico through the National Student Exchange. http://www.nse.org/
Even though Puerto Rico is a US territory, for me it seemed like a world away from home. And I learned so much about Puerto Rican culture and history, while making new friends and learning to speak their language. It was a great experience that I wouldn't trade for anything. Good luck in selecting your location of study!
