10 times the sum of a number and 14 is equal to 9 times the number.
Let the number be 'n'
10(n + 14) = 9n
This is the required equation.

Now I'm in an extremely good mood today, so I'll solve it for you too.
10(n + 14) = 9n
10n + 140 = 9n
10n = 9n - 140
10n - 9n = -140
n = -140
The number in -140

Sometimes the English language is difficult to convert directly into the language of mathematics. However, if you're willing to train your ear to "listen for terms" then it's easy!
For example, if you read "the sum of..." you should expect two items to follow. Once you hear those two things ("the sum of ___ and ___") then the math equivalent ("A+B") can be written.
Using parentheses helps a lot! In my example, above, I would write "the sum of A and B" as (A+B). This "groups" the sum inside parentheses, so no mistake is made about A or B belonging to another mathematical operation, like "times" or "minus".

Remember that "times" also needs two items; "equal" separates two halves of an equation; and "the number" always means N.

Let's begin:

"10 times ___" becomes 10(___)
"sum of ___ and ___" becomes (___+___)
"is equal to" becomes ________=_________
"9 times the number" becomes 9N

Put it all together:

10(N+14) = 9N

That is the equation.

SOLVING the equation is another process (a simple one) and would tell you what N is.

I believe N = -140, if that helps later on.

break it down word by word:

the sum of a number and 14 :
(N+14)

10 times the sum of a number and 14:
10*(N+14)

is equal to 9 times the number
10*(N+14)=9*N

and thats your answer
