Generally not. They more move the smell than get rid of it, and you don't want a smell that is sunk into your carpet because people with sensitive noses still can smell it. I know, I have one of those noses.
A safe environmental alternative is a product called Smoke Free by EnviroCorp. It's amazing, the tiniest little spritz (you can buy it aerosol or just in a liquid that you spritz) actually ELIMINATES the odor and it does NOT return. It doesn't leave an artificial or perfumey smell, the undesirable smell is just gone.

Typically cleaning the carpets and a fresh coat of paint are the only real ways to get rid of smoke smell. Otherwise you are just masking it...

It worked in my house. It may not get absolutely every particle of smell, but it does make a big difference in ALL the smells in a house.
I keep mine running all the time.
