It definitely depends on your school. My daughter cheers on Varsity at her school and only her and one other girl have backhandsprings. I am an allstar cheer coach as well. Tumbling is not everything in cheerleading. We have girls who do not tumble at all but still are amazing cheerleaders. They have beautiful jumps, motions, etc. One thing to definitely work on is your flexibility. If a backhandspring is required then call around to some allstar cheer gyms or gymnastics centers and see if they offer cheer tumble classes. Good luck!

I cheered my sophomore year of high school (which was 5 years ago, so things may have changed), but we were not required to know any gymnastics, other than the typical jumps. They said it HELPED, but again, not required.
I did not do any back handsprings or anything, and I made the Varsity squad on my first try. And the school I went to was pretty competitive.
So like other users have said, it really depends. I would check with either a) cheerleaders you know that have already been in the program, b) the athletic director at your school may have more information, or c) there should be some sort of a handout for cheerleading tryouts, saying what you should be able to do, etc...
GOOD LUCK!

I think it depends on the squad. I was a high school cheerleader for a competitive high school cheerleading program. I could not do a back handspring and still made the squad. I think it definitely helps to know as much as you can but unless it's a specific requirement I wouldn't worry about it as long as your other skills are good. I would talk to the coach and find out what the requirements are so you'll know what you need to do to make the squad. Oh, and practice a lot.

In middle school its not required, but in high school and of course college, it is.
If you don't know how t o do one, take up a gymnastics class at a local gymnastics place in your area.

in my highschool you need to know how to do a backhandspring to be on Varsity. But for JV, basically anyone could make it if they tried.

Well, you shouldn't be obese. I think that is the only requirement.
