better drugs n(anesthesis & pain killers that result in less pain, better tooth filling materials (composites, alloys), better technology (lasers & air drills), dentures and prosthetic materials, more sterile technique, better trained dentists (years of school vs, being a "barber") to name a few...

In the beginning there wasn't any dentist, so to speak. The town doctor pulled the tooth. In today's times, we do all we can to restore the tooth and extraction is the last resort. We have dentist today that can do the greatest things to improve ones oral hygine and smile.

well, years ago there was no anesthesic! imagine getting a tooth without any!
