It really depends on what you mean by "semester". The traditional academic year was divided into fall and spring semesters. In the United States, fall semester usually runs from late August or early September through mid December, and spring semester runs from mid January through May. Most bachelor's degree programs have traditionally required eight semesters or four years of credits. (Some colleges divide their year into "quarters" rather than semesters, in which case there are 3 quarters in an academic year.)

Most colleges also offer a summer term, which usually covers June and July and sometimes part of August. This is almost always less actual time than a standard semester, but classes meet for longer periods, so the same amount of material is covered and the same amount of credit is issued for summer classes as for traditional semester classes. Some colleges may also have special terms (like a "J-Term" in January or a "May Term" after the spring semester), when students intensively study one or two courses for a short time.

You can save time (but not necessarily money) by taking courses in summer or special terms. General education courses are frequently offered during those time periods, but you may find there aren't a lot of choices in your major other than during the traditional semesters.

I took off a semester of school in college and I think it was a good thing, at least for me; I worked full time & made a pretty good amount of money. I was also glad I took off because I'm an Early Education major and I wasn't really sure if I still wanted to stay in that major and I was freaking out, I got a job at a school during the semester I took off and it just reinforced how much I loved working with kids and that I was def in the right major. Anyway, now I'm back in school and I actually have some money to spend haha. I think as long as you don't think you'll have a problem going back, then go for it...get a full time job or just go on a fun trip or something, just don't take off the semester and do nothing.

Three, sometimes four.

For instance, the college that I go to has a fall, spring and summer semester. The summer semester is half the time of fall and spring (so the work load is doubled too). Some colleges have two summer semesters.

Check with the college that you are interested in to see what they do.

There's a fall semester and a spring semester; two per college year.

Usually two, but some colleges break the year into trimesters. Some schools have a summer term in addition, but usually the course options are limited.
