Without a firewall, leaving your computer running with an open port (necessary when a program is accessing the internet) would be crazy. But most firewalls can deal with having your AIM program running just make certain that you check that your AIM is properly patched and updated.. avoid beta versions.

Any time you have your computer on, naturally it would be easier to get into than if it were turned off. Your amount of security is dependent on the programs that you're using to keep that type of problem out. Your Firewall is keeping hackers out. You're internet provider is also covering for you by hiding your true ip addy, and your windows security is making you invisible while on the net so that you cant be seen. We also have ghosting programs that are constantly ghosting your real ip addy with false addresses. Hope this helps. Larry RadioShack

Absolutely, their are hackers out their that constantly ping computers to see if they can get a live connection. Once your computer responds to the ping, then that's when the hacking tool come to play. That is if your computer is hidden behind a nice hard firewall. But other than that be careful, it's happen to me that's how I know.
