My mouse pointer keeps moving erratically all over the place and randomly clicking on things even though I'm not touching it. It's not wireless so it's got nothing to do with that - it's an optical usb mouse if that helps. If it's not a virus, what the hell is going on and how do I fix it, it's so annoying!

Try this test.

Shut down your machine.
While it's off, unplug your network connection.
Turn your computer back on and, while it's coming back up,
continually press the "F8" key every three to five seconds until you get a boot menu.

Use your arrow keys to select "Boot in safe mode" (NOT with network support).

If your mouse works O-K in safe mode, you probably have a software issue, and possibly even a virus.

If your mouse still acts up in safe mode with your network connection unplugged, you may have a hardware / mouse issue.
Do you know how to properly clean youor mouse?

Using your fingernails, rotate the little plate under the mouse ball.
Thak the ball out. Use a Q-Tip soaked with alcohol to COMPLETELY clean ALL of the little rollers. Use a paper tower wet with alcohol to clean the ball itself. Put it all back together and see what happens

Good Luck!
And Happy Surfing!

Have you tried cleaning the mouse or reinstalling the drivers for the mouse? The fact that it is clicking on stuff worries me more than the fact the pointer is jumping around. It's more likely that it's just a bad mouse. Try using a different on the computer or using that one on another computer to see if something similar happens.

What your computing device has is intrusive advert-ware, it somewhat is put in into browsers as upload-ons. As others pronounced, set up Spybot seek and wreck or LavaSoft AdAware (which i come across somewhat intrusive, itself); the two have loose variations. Spybot can provide innovations to test and eliminate malware and to place in a history technique to help preclude greater incidents. maximum obligatory, nevertheless, if for the _user_ to be professional-energetic: o do no longer set up questionable utility, upload-ons or browser gadget-bars. o do no longer click on buttons on pop-ups... in certainty, turn off pop-ups. o Set browser secure practices to a severe point. o attempt a different browser, e.g. Firefox, somewhat than IE. o set up secure practices updates on your browser and OS.

Give up using Windows, and install Linux on your computer. Linux is immune to all viruses, malware, spyware and adware.

Go to www.distrowatch.com to find out how to get all the popular flavors of Linux...

...then do an image search for Linux screen grabs on Google.
