I recommend you look for tech stuff. You won't get a good deal on clothes. If you like Asian art, Buddhist art, then that would also good a good buy for you here.

i've been to japan on vacation before and i've lived here for about a year now. the yen rate is about 115 yen to the dollar. So basically 1yen= 0.9 of a penny, when I’m shopping in Japan I equate price in yen to dollars by putting a Period in the price before the last two zeros. So a price tag of Y10,000 would equal about $100.00 in USD and Y8,500 is about $85.00.
Anyhow Japan is extremely expensive compared to the US and there aren’t many “Incredible Buys” but you will find a lot new Technology that has not made it to the states yet. I would really recommend you get out a experience the culture as much as possible while you are there. If you’re in Tokyo you have to hit up the giant Buddhist temple in Asakusa. Plus there is a lot of good tourist shopping right outside the temple. If you have the time you really should check out Niko it’s an hour north of Tokyo but its one of the best places in Japan for seeing ancient temples.
If your into night life or clubbing check out Roppongi or Shibuya!

Good luck and have fun!

I didnt find any super bargins while I was there.

Just look for stuff that seems unique to you.... I brought back quite a few charms from Japanese temples....cute little cell phone charms are fun too.

To do the conversion, I just knocked two decimal places off....just pretend that yen are pennies, if something is 10,000 yen, then just think of it being 100 bucks....its not very accurate 10,000 yen would be 84 bucks at current exchange rate...but it makes for an easy rule of thumb.

The America dollar is losing its status. it doesn't get you any great deals in other rich countries. It may be stronger than the Yen at the moment but Japanese items in general are more expensive, so it all washes.

there are not any incredible bargain buys in tech gadgets over here. Maybe back in the day there was, but not really anymore. The global market pretty makes the same thing available everywhere. There are neat toys for kids and anime related.
