I got married when I was 16 in Michigan because I was pregnant. My husband and I moved to Washington and got legally seperated in 1996. It has been ten years. I live in Oregon now. Do I have to get a divorce before I can get married again?

Yes. Hopefully you have an address and phone number for him...waiting this long will just complicate things.

In Michigan, there is no such thing as a "legal seperation"....I know...tried that before. So in the eyes of Michigan law ( in which your were married)....your not even..so called..."legally seperated"...it's filed for divorce or not filed. I would contact the county in which you where married, and ask them if you can annul the marriage since you were married less then 1 yr, or what your options are.

Yes. ALL states require you have to have a divorce before you marry. And remember depending on which state you divorce (not marry) in depends on the 50/50 law. In the state of Washington your husband and you split your assets 50/50.

Of course you do. Get a decent lawyer and tell them that you want the divorce "quick and dirty." The attorney will know what they means. It will be quick if you and he have no claims on the others money or property. If there is, you had better get out now before your assets make it possible for him to get into them.

Yes, you must have a judgement of divorcement before remarrying, or else you are committing bigamy, which is illegal in the United States.
