If you don't research the author and publisher of a book, you might reference a book that has unverified information in it. Good publishers always verify the information in a book that they are publishing.
Books tend to be out of date, sooner than information you might get on the Internet. Some books have many editions, and if you aren't using information from the latest edition, there may be changes made that you aren't aware of.

Books are actually very essential reference especially for students as well as professionals such as lawyers, archaelogist, historians, etc.Books provide us with knowledge and all the necessary references for our assignments and researches.Still for some cases they are things that we need, which we cannot find it in a book. For one reason, the book maybe out-dated or maybe the informations given are not in details. Therefore we have to find other source to get all the informations that we need or perhaps in some cases we need to do things practically to get the informations.
I recalled when I was in elementary school. Two things I have learnt which can be a good example of the bad points of using books alone as reference.
1) I recalled when I first learnt about plants and magnets for my science subject. We were tought about the two types of plants- flowering and non-flowering plants.Of course we can find pictures of the different types of plants inside the book but can we recognize the plants outside the books? Some of us maybe can,but not all, because not all the plants can be found in the garden. Therefore we were shown the actual plants to understand the lesson we were being tought.
2) The same thing about magnets.Well as we all know that magnets are made from metal with north and south poles, which attract and repel with each other. In the textbook the diagrams of the magnets,as well as the characteristics and the use of the magnets are clearly shown and stated. It was not enough information for us then, without being shown the magnet itself.
My point is that not all the informations from the books alone are good enough to be used as references. There are informations which can only be obtained by means of doing things practically or through experiences. Therefore I think, that is the bad points of using book alone as a reference.

It depends on your topic, whether the information you are using is current enough.
It's one thing to use a book as a reference point, with a quote here or there, and another to copy out great swaths of material, reworded, and try to pass it off as your own work. Teachers and professors recognize this in a heartbeat, and you will lose points. After all, they set the topic and are familiar with the literature available.
"If you copy one source, it's plagiarism; if you copy several, it's research." But be sure to give credit where credit is due.

I don't think there're any bad points of using books legitimately as your references provided that you don't plagiarize the whole sentence/paragraph/page without any reference. Academically speaking, we need such references to support our points in the reports or the theses. Few geniuses may write academic papers without references at all, but it's another step beyond for really advanced students or professors, therefore, we need to lay our academic foundations solidly first by means of good, modern and appropriate references. I assure you your lecturers and professors will be impressed and do their best to guide and help you for better academic writing.

For a paper you should ideally have a mixture of books, articles, reliable internet sources etc. The good point of books is that they're often more in-depth than an article, but sometimes they are not as current. However, my dissertation was almost entirely based upon books (it depends on the subject area studied as to whether many papers have been printed on it) and i did fine. so don't worry too much about finding articles to add to your reading list if they're irrelevant to your subject.

The main drawback is the fact that you are unable to compose a single sentence correctly. If you use any book as a source of reference, ensure that you include the author and title in credits.

Books can be out of date by the time they get published. Magazines and Journals are more up to date.

The only bad point I can think of is the presumption that you think one book is going to cover it all. Depending on the subject. That rarely ever happens. And never in fine art.

You should gleen as much as you can out of books, it is'nt about the information in them its about how YOU can use the information inside them to help you and your cause. Always good to quote some wise and noble specialist to add weight to a story.
