I think it was the other way around. The United States got involved in Vietnam's political situation by supporting a puppet regieme and taking its side in a civil war , which ultimately determined who the legitimate government was - when the US backed side lost. We had no business being there in the first place.

We told them if they fought the Japanese, they'd get their Independence. We didn't live up to that promise so Ho Chi Min went to Russia for assistance. He got it. Because of the cold war we had to take the French's side.
