It seems many channels have shows dedicated to celebrity news, and these only survive because of the public's interest. But the real question is why people are so interested in what is happening in the lives of hollywood celebrities?

People are interested in what is happening in the lives of celebrities for a few reasons.

a) for many people, celebrities are their idols. They worship them ,they like to know every little detail about them.

b)many people believe that they are our culture. People are interested in movies, so they want to know about the actors

c) to some people, they just want to know what is going on in the life of someone who has a much (seemingly) better life than them

d)everyone else cares, so why shouldn't I?

For one, it's forced down our throats. You turn on the TV you see it. You stand in line at the grocery store there are a plethera of gossip mags staring you in the face. You can get sucked into it easily. Also I think we get intrigued because of the life style they live. The money, the parties, the relationships, the fashion, the houses, the cars, etc. Average people can't even wrap their minds around what it would be like in reality to experience the fame and fortune. It seems like a dream sometimes.

For the same reason people are addicted to the lives of royalty, I suppose. What little girl, at some point, doesn't dream of being a princess? In America our celebrities are our royalty and many of them had very mundane origins - the whole "Cinderella/rags to riches" dream we've all had at one time or another (even if it's just "wouldn't it be great to win the lottery"). It looks like a life of fun and parties, going to the finest places, being able to have whatever your little heart desires, whenever it desires it.
We only see the glamor, the opulence. We forget about the constant scrutiny, the pressure (to be ultra fit or ultra thin, to always be "on", to be perfect), the total lack of privacy those people have to endure as a consequence of their fame and about the fact that underneath the designer labels and make up they're just people after all.
That and the fact that a lot of people mentally transfer the personalities of their favorite characters onto the actors who portray them. They fall in love with the ideal on screen and can't separate "Aragorn" and "Arwen" from Vigo Mortensen and Liv Tyler (for want of a more widely known example) or the "Doctor" and "Rose Tyler" from Christopher Eccleston/David Tennant and Billie Piper in the Doctor Who series'. "Harry Potter" and "Hermione Granger" are compelling and courageous young heroes, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are just teenagers - talented actors, don't get me wrong, but still just kids. People tend to forget that.

Well not all of us, only ones like me who don't have lives of our own.
Here is the cycle:
I have a boring life> i notice celebrity lives are interesting> i pay more attention to celebrity lives> i really need to get a life.
That's basically it!
It sounds like we have low self esteem...
but we're just freaks! YAY!

because we are an electronic culture, disconnected from our local communities. Talking about a celebrity today is the same as talking about the town tramp in a different era. Also, we don't like thinking too much.
