Gold gouramis get about 5-6 inches in length and are fairly agressive, so what they are saying is, dont put them in a tank smaller than 30 gallons, its ok to have other fish in the tank also but the gouramis need the swimming room, there is the 1" of fish per gallon of water rule, but you would'nt put a 1 gourami in a 5 gallon tank.
Just remember that they are one of the most agressive of the gourami family, so purchase fish that can keep up to that aggresion level.

The rule of thumb is one inch of small thin fish (like guppies, neons, danios) to one gallon of water. As the fish get larger and fatter, the ratio goes way up. Ex. a 10 inch oscar puts much more bio-load on a system than 10 one inch neons. The oscar is probably more than 500 times as large as a neon.

The gold gouramis do not need 30 gallons of water. At 5" long, each, they probably do not need more than a 20 gallon tank for the both of them. You could also add a few smaller fish to the mix too.

This rule assumes you have good filtration and are doing the required 25-30% water changes every week.

I don't know who told you that gouramis need 30 gallons but they can survive with other fish. So if you feel the need to make sure you have a 30 gallon tank, then other fish will also have more room.

on average its 30 galons for 6-8 fish.. depending on their size ..... no they doesnt mean 30 galons per fish!!!! ... my cousin has them ...and right now around 8 are living in his 30 gallons .. however i suggest you get a good filter ... not a cheap one... and replace about half of teh water in teh tank every 5 or so days / or weekly.... This is the best way to keep ur fish alive :) goodluck .....

unless the gouramis are huge fish, they probably don't need 30gallons per fish! You should probably ask the people that told you that, just to be safe.
