A GPS reader is convenient but out at sea, a piece of mechanical equipment seems more reliable. Could anyone teach me how to use a sextant.

You can not really tell anyone how to use a sextant in a few sentences. It takes hands on work and practice. I carry an extra GPS as well as extra batteries. We were told at onepoint that it was not being taught anymore at the Naval Academy. However there was such an uproar that it is back.

It is totally irresponsible to undertake oceanvoyages depending
on electronic equipment only.

Astronomical navigation is the only 100% reliable method.

Learning it is not easy but there are shortcuts.
