The depth of the water shouldn't have anything to do w/your swimming ability, your confidence maybe but not how you swim. Are you doing the crawl, breast stroke or underwater? If you are swimming underwater, are you diving in or just swimming down from the ledge? I don't know if this is helping or if I am just asking you questions to consider.

The same way you swim in shallow water.

My father can hold his breath for a phenomenal length of time. He does so by over oxygenating his blood before he dives in. All he does is breath very deeply for several minutes, this puts more oxygen in your blood so that your brain uses its reserves slower. Try it at practice sometime, just make sure you have others around you until you see how it works for you.
