Well, the ancestors of the American Indians (Polynesians) came over the Bering Strait along the northern most area of the continent. Unknown time frame; perhaps 11-16,000 years ago. Then the Nordic tribes (scandinavian / vikings) came over sometime around the 700's or so (double check). Then Columbus came over in October of 1492. His visit was the first thoroughly documented.
