Is it a girl who turned in to a man? Or a man that turned into a girl? How did they get that way and what gender are they? I'm really confused on this but I don't want to ask the people who are saying this; I don't want them to laugh at me.

After reading some of the answers, there needs to be a bit of clarification. Some men want to be, or inside feel like they were supposed to be, women--these are the transgenders or transsexuals. They are in the process of transitioning. In that process, they take hormones and possibly operations to give them feminine features. Not all transsexuals make the complete change, removing their 'outboard motor' and having an 'inboard motor' installed. Then too there are homosexuals (and not all transsexuals think of themselves as homosexuals), who not only want the feminine position in their relationships, but add a pair of embellishments that makes the matter a little confusing. Commonly, the "shemale" is happy to have the female parts and persona while keeping the "outboard motor". Not all who look like shemales are.

It could be a couple of things. It could be someone whom was born with a vagina and a penis, but mostly has female tendancies in respect to their personality and attire/ sexual attractions. Or it could be someone whom had a surgery to become a female and was male.
The best thing to do is just ask the person. It could just be a visious rumor. Good Luck

most likely its a man that wants to be a woman. does he /she dress like a woman or a man? most women who try to look like men wear real baggy clothes and have short hair cuts or braids.
most men who try to look like women wear really feminine clothes because they want people to think they are woman bu tsometimes they over do it by the way they walk or talk.sometimes you can tell by teir facial features like hair stubble, muscular hands,etc.
