which layer? outer- mid- or base-layer. it's really the best to layer and adjust how warm you want it to have.
sorry, but gore tex has nothing to do at all with the warmth, it is a membrane against wind and water (OK if you are dry you keep warmer, but gore tex is not the only brand for that and warmth is not it's main goal)

I just got a 686 Jacket and I love it. It's got a removable fleece liner, and removable hood so it works well in winter and spring.

And Hot Chillies make the best long underwear.

hot chillys is the best for thermal underwear,because it fits your legs and butt all over and is not lose.unico is also pretty good
