It's a lil late in the season to go the beach. But the closest for you would be Staten Island... But then you'd have to pay a toll, so that's sorta senseless. The closest one (With some popularity) in NJ is in the South Amboy area of NJ. (Union Beach, Keyport, Keansburg) Out of those I'd pick Keyport, I believe they have a boardwalk. Now, if you want to go further Atlantic Highlands & then finally Sandy Hook which is the closest 'public' (But you gotta pay) beach for you. I'd go for Keyport or Union Beach as the closest nicest one for you.

I would recommend Sandy Hook if you are looking for a a nice beach to for sunning, swimming, or the bicycle ride on.

Just a little further south is long Branch, which offers restaurants and other activities in addition to a beach
