These are famous for the switch on top of the transfer case going bad over time (called the 4WD indicator switch, I believe.) It has three vacuum ports sticking up from it. When it goes bad, vacuum is not allowed to the servo, and it won't go into four wheel drive. The servos rarely go bad. Also, the cables and forks have proven quite durable, though all of these components have a certain failure rate. Your GM parts guy will know exactly what you need when you go in and tell him your symptoms.

Ck vacuum sw on transfer case. ck vacuum hoses for kinks and rubbed places.also ck vacuum . If this seems ok ,unplug the T Case control module ,located on the right side kick panel, Sometimes the module goes in logic lockup mode ,and will work after unplugging it. Have fixed some Blazers with same symptoms.Worth a try.

servo is vacuum operated. check for a leak in the vacuum line going to it.
